Generac PWRcell cost: what actually drives the installed price
We do not publish a PWRcell price, because there is no such thing as one. Here are the seven things in Generac's own documents that move the number on your quote, and how to read a bid against them.
Search for a PWRcell price and you will find plenty of numbers. None of them are Generac's, because Generac does not publish an installed price, and an installed price is not really a property of the battery anyway. It is a property of your house, your panel, your solar, your wall, and your county.
So this guide does something more useful than invent a figure. It walks through every variable in Generac's own published documents that moves the number on a quote, in rough order of how much it moves it. Specs come from the PWRcell 2 spec guide (document A0008625505, REV A, 07/2025), the PWRcell 2 Battery installation manual (APKE00076), and the original PWRcell inverter spec sheet (XVT076A03, RevG). We read all of them on August 6, 2026. Our own PWRcell model page records the PWRcell 2 figures.
We have not installed or tested a PWRcell. Everything below is documentation, not bench work.
The short answer
Seven things drive the number, and only the first two are the battery:
1. How many 3.0 kWh modules go in the cabinet
2. How many cabinets
3. Which inverter generation the system is built around
4. Whether the Smart Disconnect Switch lets you skip a main panel upgrade
5. What else lands in the scope, such as a generator, a spacer kit, or floor support
6. What your mounting wall and your site require
7. Where you live, which sets code, permitting, interconnection, and labor
1. Module count buys power, not just capacity
This is the part most PWRcell explainers get wrong, and it is the single largest lever on a quote.
The PWRcell 2 Battery Cabinet holds 3.0 kWh DCB battery modules, minimum three, maximum six. The spec guide names the resulting configurations M3 through M6, and publishes both energy and power for each:

Read that table twice. On this architecture, capacity and power are the same purchase. If your house needs the surge to start an air conditioner compressor, you are not buying kilowatts, you are buying modules, and the kilowatt-hours come along whether your usage needs them or not.
Generac footnotes the AC start figures as based on 2 kW of household consumption before the compressor starts, with the battery between 12 and 100 percent state of charge, at an ambient temperature below 104 degrees Fahrenheit. It also warns that de-rating may occur above 104 degrees Fahrenheit and below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. A hot garage in August is exactly when you want the number, and exactly when the footnote applies.
Two smaller module-count effects worth knowing before you read a bid. The installation manual has a step titled "Installing Module Spacer (odd number module installs only)," and the spec guide lists a Module Spacer Kit alongside the M3 and M5 configurations, so odd module counts carry an extra part. And the module warranty is 10 years or 7.56 MWh of throughput, whichever comes first, with the inverter, cabinet, and Smart Disconnect Switch warranted for 10 years. That throughput cap is 2,520 full module cycles at the published 3.0 kWh each, which is roughly seven years at one full cycle a day. 2. Cabinet count, and the 11.5 kW footnote
The PWRcell 2 Inverter (APKE00075) is rated for 11.5 kW maximum AC power output, 48 A maximum continuous AC current, on a 60 A overcurrent protection device.
But the spec guide's first footnote says it plainly: system power is limited by the battery's maximum continuous power, and 11.5 kW can be achieved with two PWRcell 2 Battery Cabinets. A single fully loaded M6 cabinet gives 10.5 kW. So the difference between "10.5 kW" and "11.5 kW" on paper is a second wall-mounted cabinet, a second set of modules, a second mounting bracket and anchorage detail, and the wall space and clearance for both. That is not a trim level. It is a different install.
The installation manual carries a separate clearance drawing for multiple units, distinct from the single-unit one, so a two-cabinet plan needs a wall that can actually take both and the space around them.
3. Which inverter generation you are being quoted
There are two very different PWRcell systems in the field, and a quote can be for either.
The PWRcell 2 system is AC-coupled. Its spec guide lists compatible solar inverters as Generac PWRmicro and Enphase IQ8, with maximum backup PV of 15 kW AC. Practically, that means it bolts onto an AC solar array rather than requiring the solar to be rebuilt around it.
The original PWRcell is a different animal. The XVT076A03 single-phase inverter is a bi-directional REbus DC-coupled unit rated 7,600 W continuous grid-tied, with a maximum recommended DC PV input of 10 kW, and it uses PV Link optimizers on the array. Its island mode specifications are the ones to read closely on any whole-home promise:
- 7,600 W maximum AC power in island mode
- 9,000 W with an external transfer switch and a single six-module battery cabinet
- 11,000 W with an external transfer switch and two battery cabinets, eight modules minimum
The footnote is explicit that in island mode, continuous power output is restricted to 7.6 kW unless backup power is routed through an external transfer switch in a whole-home backup application. So on the original system, whole-home capability comes with extra hardware in the scope, and the peak figures are quoted at 104 degrees Fahrenheit as peak performance.
If you already own an original PWRcell, note that the PWRcell 2 battery manual lists a "Generac PWRcell Upgrade Kit" among its accessories. Ask what an upgrade path costs against a new system before assuming either.
4. The Smart Disconnect Switch, and the panel upgrade you might not need
On most home battery installs, the biggest swing item is not the battery at all. It is whether your main electrical service panel has to be upgraded to accommodate the new source.
Generac's answer is the Smart Disconnect Switch (SDS, model APKE00067). Its spec sheet says the SDS aggregates all power generation sources into one hub, supports AC-coupled PV, battery backup, and generator integration, and has integrated power control systems (PCS), "reducing the need for main service panel upgrades." Published SDS figures:
- 200 A current rating, 120/240 V single phase
- Automatic transfer time under 50 ms
- Maximum backup load panel 200 A, maximum non-backup load panel 100 A
- Suitable for service and non-service entrance
- Supports both partial and whole home backup
- Indoor and outdoor rated, NEMA 3R
Two things follow for your quote. First, "reducing the need for" is Generac's phrasing, not a guarantee, and whether your specific panel escapes an upgrade is a question for the installer's site assessment, in writing. Second, the choice between partial and whole home backup is a scope decision you make, not a property of the battery, and partial backup usually means a protected subpanel and the labor to move circuits into it. 5. What else is in the box, and what else lands in the scope
Things Generac publishes as included or optional, all of which show up as line items:
- An ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced. The spec guide states every PWRcell 2 system includes one. If a quote lists it separately, ask why.
- Generator integration. The system works with Generac air-cooled home standby generators up to 28 kW, and the brochure describes outage protection as "virtually endless" when paired with one, footnoted as subject to fuel availability. Adding a standby generator is a second appliance, a second permit, and a fuel supply, and it is the reason many people are looking at Generac in the first place. - Optional floor support with leveling feet (APKE00109), listed in the spec guide for cabinets that are not going purely on the wall.
- Module Spacer Kit, for odd module counts, as above.
One marketing claim we will not repeat as fact: the brochure says the system "provides up to 33% more backup capability compared to the industry leader" without naming the compared unit or the test basis. Treat it as advertising until someone shows you the comparison.
6. Your wall, your site, your clearances
The PWRcell 2 battery cabinet is a wall-mounted unit that gets heavy. Published mechanical figures: the empty enclosure weighs 113 lb with a maximum lift weight of 62.6 lb, and the installed unit weighs 278 lb at M3, 333 lb at M4, 388 lb at M5, and 443 lb at M6, in a cabinet 10.75 x 23 x 70 inches. The inverter adds 62.1 lb and the SDS 54 lb.
The installation manual is where site cost hides. Without quoting its measurements, it carries a pre-installation site assessment, separate location requirements for indoor and outdoor installation, environmental requirements, minimum unit clearances (both to the inverter and SDS, and between multiple cabinets), fastener and fastening requirements, and an entire section of seismic anchorage details published separately for wood studs at 16 inches on center, wood studs at greater than 16 inches on center, concrete, CMU, and metal studs at and above 16 inches on center. Which of those your wall is decides real labor.
Two hard environmental limits worth checking before anyone quotes anything:
- Temperature. Charging range 23 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, discharging range minus 4 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, and the manual notes that operating outside the discharging range may void the warranty.
- Elevation. Maximum 6,560 feet, and the battery manual states the module warranty is void if installed above the specified elevation. If you live in the mountain west, confirm your address before anything else.
The manual is also unambiguous that installation by a homeowner is prohibited and that only qualified personnel may install the battery. This is not a self-install product, so labor is in every quote by definition.
7. Where you live
Region shows up three ways, and only one of them is a discount.
Code and permitting. The installation manual points installers at NFPA 855 for stationary energy storage systems, the National Electrical Code, the International Building, Fire, and Residential Codes, and then tells them to check with the Authority Having Jurisdiction for local requirements. Some jurisdictions inspect a battery like a minor construction project. Some barely blink. That is a labor and calendar difference, not a hardware difference.
Interconnection. The PWRcell 2 inverter and SDS carry listings including UL 1741 SA and SB, IEEE 1547 and 1547a, California Rule 21, Rule 14H (HECO SRD V2.0), ISO-NE, PREPA Regulation No. 8915, and CSIP. Those listings exist because each of those territories runs its own interconnection process, and the manual is explicit that connecting to the grid must only be done after receiving prior approval from the utility.
Labor. No manufacturer publishes this and neither will we. It is a real and large part of the spread between two quotes for the same hardware, which is why our cost guide treats three itemized bids as the actual price discovery mechanism.
The New England question: ConnectedSolutions
A lot of PWRcell searching comes from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire, and it is usually really a question about ConnectedSolutions. Here is what the program administrators publish, all read on August 6, 2026, scoped to what it means for a PWRcell buyer. Massachusetts. Mass Save's battery storage page states that residents receive $275 per kilowatt for a battery's average contribution during summer events, that a sponsor will signal the system no more than 60 times per summer with each event lasting a maximum of three hours, and that summer events occur on non-holidays between June 1 and September 30, between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Eligibility requires being an existing customer of Cape Light Compact, Eversource, or National Grid, with a qualifying system under 50 kW of inverter size. Generac PWRcell is on the participating manufacturer list. Mass Save's own published illustration: for a typical battery capable of a 5 kW continuous contribution during these events, customers could receive up to $1,375 per year of participation. Rhode Island. Rhode Island Energy's battery program page states an incentive rate of $225 per average kW performed each summer, a cap of $6,875 per year, a rate lock for the first five summers, a June through September season, events between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. lasting two or three hours, and no more than 60 events per summer. Generac is on its approved battery partner list. Two conditions matter for a PWRcell buyer: Rhode Island Energy states the battery must be charged from an on-site renewable resource rather than the grid to participate, and that a standalone battery without solar can participate but its discharge rate during events is limited to the home's energy use at the time, which may reduce earnings. New Hampshire. This is where the honest answer is a no, for now. Eversource's New Hampshire ConnectedSolutions battery page publishes an incentive of $225 per average kW used, a June 1 to September 30 season, 30 to 60 events, event duration of two to three hours, all between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., and its own illustration that a typical home battery contributing an average of 5 kW per event would earn $1,125 per year. But the same page states that Tesla is currently the only approved manufacturer accepting enrollments, and lists Generac among manufacturers still working to stand up their programs. It also warns that some manufacturers may collect a portion of the incentive payment, and tells customers to ask which. If ConnectedSolutions income is part of why you are buying a PWRcell in New Hampshire, get the enrollment status in writing before you sign. Our New Hampshire page tracks the state's other programs.
Generac's own ConnectedSolutions page matches the utilities on eligibility: it says you must own your PWRcell and be a residential customer of Eversource in Massachusetts, National Grid in Massachusetts, Cape Light Compact, or Rhode Island Energy, and that you apply by emailing Generac rather than the utility. It also explains the one setting that changes your earnings: the backup reserve in the app, which the battery will not discharge below during an event. Generac says the most common setting is 20 percent, and that it can be lowered to zero on PWRcell 2 or five percent on PWRcell 1 to maximize the incentive. That is a direct trade of outage readiness for program income, and it is yours to make. Generac's page also publishes its own estimated incentive amounts for an 18 kWh PWRcell under each utility's rate, footnoted as assuming 80 percent of the battery participates every time the utility calls, and carries its own disclaimer that this is not a guarantee of performance. We would treat the utility's published rate as the fact and the manufacturer's projection as a projection.

What 2026 does to the arithmetic
There is no federal purchase credit softening any of this. The Section 25D residential clean energy credit expired on December 31, 2025, so a homeowner buying a PWRcell for cash or with a loan in 2026 gets zero federal credit. The only surviving federal route is Section 48E, which the owner of the system claims, so it can only reach a homeowner indirectly through a lease or power purchase agreement where a company owns the hardware. That makes the state and utility layer, and the scope decisions above, the whole game on net cost.
How to read a PWRcell quote
Ask for these in writing, and compare bids item by item rather than as one number:
1. Which configuration. M3, M4, M5, or M6, and how many cabinets. Confirm the continuous power figure that follows from it.
2. Which generation. PWRcell 2 with the APKE00075 inverter, or the original PWRcell with the XVT076A03. If the latter, ask whether an external transfer switch is in the scope and what the island-mode power figure is with your configuration.
3. Backup scope. Whole home or partial, and if partial, which circuits and whether a protected subpanel is included.
4. Panel work. Whether the SDS avoids a main service panel upgrade at your address, stated as a finding from a site assessment rather than a general claim.
5. Site work. Mounting surface, which anchorage detail applies, whether floor support is needed, and whether the location clears the manual's indoor or outdoor requirements.
6. Solar. Whether your existing array is compatible as-is, or needs changes.
7. Program enrollment. Who enrolls you in ConnectedSolutions, whether they take a cut of the incentive, and what backup reserve setting they will configure.
