Is a home battery worth it in Delaware?

Delaware has full retail net metering, so in 2026 a battery is mostly about backup during coastal storms and self-consumption rather than export arbitrage. The state Green Energy Program has historically funded solar but not standalone residential batteries; confirm current offerings with your utility.

Net metering
Full retail 1:1 net metering is mandated statewide for Delmarva Power and the municipal/cooperative utilities, with monthly rollover of excess credits and annual reconciliation. Residential systems up to 25 kW qualify. This is a relatively favorable net-metering regime.

What drives battery value here

Coastal exposure to hurricanes, nor'easters, and severe storms that cause outages, though the grid is relatively compact and reliable. Backup is a moderate driver given coastal storm exposure, though outages are less frequent than in tornado-alley or hurricane-coast states.

The federal picture in 2026

The federal residential purchase credit (Section 25D) expired on December 31, 2025, so a 2026 cash buyer gets nothing federal. The only surviving federal pathway is Section 48E, which a company claims on a lease or PPA. State and utility programs, where they exist, now do the heavy lifting.
