Garage door opener battery backup: what the law already built in

Battery backup for a garage door opener: California has required a battery inside every residential opener sold there since July 2019. What that battery holds.

The garage door is the load where the honest advice is usually to buy nothing. A modern opener may already contain a battery because a state law required one, the manufacturer publishes what that battery holds, and the energy involved in lifting a door is small enough that a power station is a strange instrument to reach for. This guide works from the statute and from Chamberlain's own published figures, and it ends up recommending less hardware than most pages on this site. We have not tested any of these products.

The statute that put a battery inside the opener

California Health and Safety Code section 19892 reads, in the part that matters:

"On or after July 1, 2019, no person, corporation, or entity shall manufacture for sale in this state, sell, offer for sale at retail or wholesale, or install in this state a residential automatic garage door opener that does not have a battery backup function that is designed to operate when activated because of an electrical outage. The battery backup function shall operate in a manner so that the automatic garage door opener is operational without interruption during an electrical outage."

Subdivision (b) extends it to "all automatic garage door openers manufactured and sold for use in any residence and other residential applications of automatic garage door openers manufactured for commercial purposes." Subdivision (c) closes the obvious loophole: on or after the same date, no replacement residential garage door may be installed in a way that connects it to an existing opener that does not meet the requirement, regardless of when that opener was made. The section was added by Stats. 2018, Ch. 621, Sec. 2, which is SB 969, effective January 1, 2019.

Section 19891 attaches the enforcement. A violation of section 19892 carries a civil penalty of one thousand dollars per opener installed, manufactured, sold, or offered for sale that is not in compliance, and proceedings may be initiated by the local building department, by affected consumers, or by the district attorney.

The practical effect reaches past California. Opener manufacturers build for a national market rather than a state variant, so the feature has become common on new residential openers generally. That is an observation about product lines, not a legal requirement anywhere else, and it means the only reliable way to know whether your opener has a battery is to look at the opener.

What UL 325 covers, and what it does not

UL 325 comes up constantly in this conversation, and it is the wrong standard for the battery question. It is the Standard for Safety for Door, Drapery, Gate, Louver, and Window Operators and Systems, and what US law takes from it is entrapment protection. CPSC states that the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 1990 "mandated that automatic residential garage door operators (GDOs) manufactured on or after January 1, 1991 conform to the entrapment protection requirements of the 1988 version of UL 325," and that the Commission issued its own garage door operator rule, 16 CFR Part 1211, in June 1991.

California's statute keeps the two apart in the same chapter. Section 19890 requires the automatic reverse safety device complying with UL 325, and separately requires a tactile edge sensor, optical sensor or equivalent from January 1, 1993. The battery lives in section 19892, added twenty five years later. If someone tells you UL 325 requires a backup battery, they have merged two different requirements that happen to sit near each other in the code.

What the built-in battery actually holds

Chamberlain publishes the specification, which is more than most makers of anything on this site do:

"A fully charged battery is designed to provide the operator with 24 hours of standby time during which the opener can run up to 20 full cycles at room temperature. It is a 12-volt rechargeable battery with 4.5 AH (amp hours). The weight of the battery is 4.5 lbs. The backup battery is an accessory and has a one year warranty from the date of purchase."

Twelve volts times 4.5 amp hours is 54 watt hours. That single figure explains the shape of every claim around it. Twenty full cycles out of 54 watt hours is roughly 2.7 watt hours per cycle if the cycles were all the battery did, which they are not, since the same 54 watt hours also has to hold the logic board, the radio and the Wi-Fi alive for the 24 hours. Chamberlain does not publish how the capacity splits between the two, so the honest statement is a bound rather than a number: whatever the opener's standby draw is on battery, it averages under about 2.25 watts, because 54 watt hours spread across 24 hours is 2.25 W and some of that budget goes to the door.

Chamberlain also publishes how the opener tells you where it stands, which is worth knowing before an outage rather than during one. Beeping every two seconds with a solid orange battery LED means the unit is running on battery. Beeping every 30 seconds with a flashing orange LED means the battery is low. A solid red LED means "the battery is dead and cannot recharge." Note the warranty term in the quote above: one year, on a consumable that sits on a trickle charge in an unconditioned garage. A backup battery you have never checked is a backup battery of unknown state.

The wattage the manufacturer will not publish

If you do want to run the opener from a power station, you need its draw under load, and Chamberlain says plainly that it does not publish that. Its electrical specifications article states that "all residential garage door openers manufactured for use in the United States and Canada are rated for 120V AC, 60Hz line power," walks through a worked example of 120 volts times 2.9 amps equalling 348 watts, and then adds the caveat: "The amp and wattage ratings above are measured with the garage door opener idle and with the lights off. For specifications on electrical output for when the garage door opener is under load from the garage door and in motion, contact a trained electrician as power may vary on different factors such as the type of door, bulb type/wattage, etc."

So the label figure is not the motor figure, and the motor figure is not published. This is the same gap our sump pump guide runs into and the opposite of the well pump case, where the motor manufacturer publishes locked rotor amps for every model it sells. For a garage opener, the honest planning basis is the energy figure Chamberlain does publish, not a starting current it does not.

Why a power station is the wrong size of answer

A residential opener is a plug-in load on a ceiling receptacle, so unlike a well pump or a furnace it needs no transfer switch, no electrician and no interlock to reach a battery. You can simply unplug it and plug it into the station. That makes it tempting, and the arithmetic makes it pointless as a standalone project.

Work from Chamberlain's own figures. Twenty full cycles out of 54 watt hours is on the order of 2.7 watt hours a cycle. A 2,764.8 Wh power station holds roughly a thousand times that, and a 4,096 Wh unit roughly fifteen hundred times. Nobody opens their garage door a thousand times during an outage. The internal battery, at roughly one fiftieth of the smallest of those capacities, already covers a day, and the manual release covers the rest for free.

The genuine case for putting the opener on a station is different: it is that you are already backing up the garage circuit for something else, and the opener costs you almost nothing to include. Before you assume you are covered

Check three things, in this order. Whether your opener has a backup battery at all, which is a question about your model and its year rather than about the law where you live. Whether that battery still holds charge, since Chamberlain warrants it for one year and publishes a solid red LED as the sign that it cannot recharge. And whether you can get into the garage from outside without power, because Chamberlain states that if the door has no exterior emergency release kit and you have no other way in, "manual operation from outside will not be possible during a power outage." That last one is the failure people actually experience, and no battery you buy afterwards fixes it.
