Home battery operating temperature limits: heat and cold by model
Published operating, recommended and storage temperature ranges for all 17 home batteries we track, with the derating thresholds that sit 10 to 30 degrees inside the headline limit.
Temperature is the one environmental spec every home battery datasheet publishes. All 17 models on our comparison pages carry a range. That makes it look like a solved comparison, and it is not, because the makers publish three different kinds of temperature limit and rarely label which one the headline number is.
There is the operating range, which is where the unit will run. There is a recommended or optimum range, which is where it will run at full rated performance, and which five makers publish separately. And there is a storage range, which applies when the unit is powered down, which is sometimes much tighter than the operating range and on four products depends on how long it sits.
This page is the full model-by-model reference for all three, with each maker's own basis attached. This page covers both ends and the storage numbers nobody reads. Every figure is a published manufacturer specification. We have not tested any of these products.
Operating ranges as published
Sorted by upper limit, highest ceiling first. Where a maker splits charging from discharging, both are given.

- FranklinWH aPower 2: -4 to 122 degrees F, and the datasheet adds that it operates up to 131 degrees F at 5 kW derated output. - Qcells Q.HOME CORE: battery charge 32 to 127.4 degrees F, discharge 14 to 127.4 degrees F. The Q.VOLT inverter is separately rated -13 to 140 degrees F with a published de-rating start temperature of 113 degrees F, and the Q.HOME HUB is rated -13 to 140 degrees F. - Tesla Powerwall 3: -4 to 122 degrees F, a single range with a footnote marker. The Powerwall 3 Expansion unit carries its own note that performance may be de-rated above 104 degrees F. Source: Tesla Powerwall 3 datasheet.
- Tesla Powerwall 2: -4 to 122 degrees F, a single range, with performance de-rated below 50 degrees F or above 109 degrees F. Discontinued, and the only model in our set whose datasheet publishes a low-temperature derate threshold inside its own headline range. Source: Powerwall 2 AC datasheet.
- Generac PWRcell: charging 23 to 122 degrees F, discharging -4 to 122 degrees F, with a footnote that de-rating may occur above 104 degrees F and below 32 degrees F, and a second footnote stating that operating the battery outside the discharging range may void the warranty. - SolarEdge Home Battery, 400V: -4 to 122 degrees F ambient. SolarEdge is the only maker in the set to publish a duty limit rather than only a floor: its datasheet states that the maximum allowed duration below 32 degrees F is limited to 30 percent of the days in any rolling 12-month period. - Panasonic EverVolt 2.0: battery charge 32 to 122 degrees F, discharge 14 to 122 degrees F. The inverter is rated -13 to 140 degrees F and the SmartBox only -4 to 113 degrees F, which makes the SmartBox the system's real ceiling. - LG Home 8: discharging -4 to 122 degrees F, charging 14 to 113 degrees F, with a separately published recommended range of 32 to 95 degrees F discharging and 32 to 91.4 degrees F charging. The SE Box is rated -4 to 122 degrees F. Source: LG official spec page for the RA768K16A11.

The recommended range is where the spec sheet gets honest
Five makers publish a second, much narrower band alongside the operating range, and the gap between the two is the most useful thing on the page.
- Savant: operating 32 to 113 degrees F, recommended 50 to 95 degrees F. An 18 degree haircut at the top and an 18 degree one at the bottom.
- sonnen: operating 32 to 113 degrees F, maximum power only within 41 to 95 degrees F.
- SunPower: ambient operating 14 to 113 degrees F, recommended 32 to 86 degrees F. A 27 degree gap at the top.
- Enphase IQ Battery 5P: operating down to -4 and up to 131 degrees F, optimum 32 to 86 degrees F.
- LG: operating up to 122 degrees F discharging, recommended up to 95 degrees F.
Read those five together and a pattern falls out: the comfortable band for a home battery is roughly 32 to 95 degrees F, which is close to the band a person is comfortable in. The 113 to 140 degree ceilings are survival limits, not performance limits.
The makers who publish only one range are not necessarily worse products. They have simply left the reader to assume that the top of the operating range is also the top of the rated performance, and on the products where the derating threshold is published separately, it never is. Generac and Tesla both put it at 104 degrees F. Qcells puts it at 113 degrees F. Enphase puts charging reduction at 113 degrees F and discharging reduction at 122 degrees F on the IQ Battery 10C. FranklinWH is the most explicit of all, publishing full output to 122 degrees F and reduced 5 kW output up to 131 degrees F.
An attached garage in Phoenix or Houston in August does not stay under 104 degrees F. That is a real reason to care about which side of that threshold your model sits, and a real reason to weigh a shaded or conditioned location, which where to install a home battery covers in detail.
Storage temperature is a separate spec, and sometimes a tighter one
This is the range that applies when the unit is not running: in a warehouse, in a garage waiting on an inspection, or in a house that has been shut down. Several makers publish limits here that are narrower than their operating limits, and five make them depend on how long the unit sits.
- Tesla Powerwall 3: storage -4 to 86 degrees F, up to 95 percent relative humidity non-condensing, with an initial state of energy of 25 percent specified. That ceiling is 36 degrees below the 122 degree operating ceiling.
- SolarEdge: -22 to 140 degrees F for a limited period, and 14 to 86 degrees F for storage up to 12 months from the shipment date.
- Fortress Power: 14 to 77 degrees F for 6 months, or -4 to 113 degrees F for 3 months.
- Panasonic and Qcells: both publish 4 to 122 degrees F for 3 months and 32 to 104 degrees F for 1 year on the battery. One caveat on the 3 month figure: Panasonic's datasheet prints it as "4 to 122°F (-20 to 50°C)", and -20 degrees C is -4 degrees F, not 4. The Fahrenheit and Celsius columns of that one row do not agree. We record the Fahrenheit figure as printed and flag the inconsistency rather than silently pick a side.
- Generac: optimal storage of -4 to 77 degrees F for the DCB battery module, with a maximum storage temperature of 122 degrees F for under one month.
- LG: -4 to 122 degrees F. SunPower: shelf ambient -4 to 113 degrees F. EG4: -4 to 122 degrees F. FranklinWH: 14 to 113 degrees F at up to 95 percent relative humidity, non-condensing.
The time dependency is the part that surprises people. A battery is not simply rated for a storage temperature; on five of these products it is rated for a temperature over a stated duration, and a longer sit demands a narrower band. If a unit is going to be commissioned months after delivery, that is a question worth asking the installer.
The narrowest box in the system is the system's limit
An AC-coupled home battery is not one product. It is a battery, a controller or gateway, and on the DC-coupled products a separate inverter, each with its own environmental table.
- Panasonic rates the battery to 122 degrees F, the inverter to 140 degrees F, and the SmartBox to 113 degrees F. The SmartBox is the ceiling.
- Generac rates the battery to 122 degrees F and both the inverter and the Smart Disconnect Switch to a wider -22 to 122 degrees F. The battery's 23 degree F charging floor is the constraint at the cold end.
- Qcells rates the battery to 127.4 degrees F and both the inverter and the hub to 140 degrees F, with the inverter's derating starting at 113 degrees F.
- Enphase rates the IQ System Controller 3 from -40 to 122 degrees F, far wider than either battery.
- Tesla rates Gateway 3 and Backup Gateway 2 at -4 to 122 degrees F, matching the Powerwall, and the Backup Switch at a wider -40 to 122 degrees F.
Whichever box has the narrowest range is the one that decides what the installed system tolerates. On most of these it is the battery. On Panasonic it is not.
How to use this
If you live somewhere with real summers, find your model's derating threshold rather than its operating ceiling, and if the maker does not publish one, ask for it in writing. If the unit is going to sit before commissioning, check the storage range and whether it is time-limited.
And read every environmental table in the quote, not only the battery's. Every figure above is a manufacturer datasheet claim recorded with its published basis. None of it is a measurement we made, and none of it is a promise about the temperature inside your garage.
