Which home batteries use LFP chemistry? A datasheet roundup
Every home battery we track, sorted by the cell chemistry its own datasheet states: LFP, NMC, or not specified. Twelve models say LFP or LiFePO4 in print. Four datasheets say nothing we can call a chemistry, and one of those four answers it in a different document.
Battery chemistry is the one spec that buyers hear about constantly and can almost never verify. Installers say LFP. Forum posts say LFP. Comparison sites fill in the blank for every model in the table, including the ones whose makers have never published the answer.
So we did the boring version instead. We opened the manufacturer datasheet behind each of the 17 models on our comparison pages and recorded exactly what it says about cell chemistry, and nothing more. Twelve print LFP or LiFePO4. One prints NMC. Four print either nothing or a family name that is not a chemistry, and for one of those four the answer turns out to be published elsewhere by the same manufacturer, which is its own lesson. Every figure below is a published manufacturer specification, quoted with its source, and none of it comes from our own testing.
How we classified each model
Three groups, one rule each:
- LFP. The maker's own datasheet or spec page states LFP, lithium iron phosphate, or LiFePO4. These are the same chemistry under different labels, so they sit together.
- NMC. The datasheet states NMC (nickel manganese cobalt).
- Not specified. The datasheet either omits chemistry entirely or says only lithium-ion, which is a family that contains LFP, NMC and several others. A generic family name is not an answer, so we do not upgrade it to one.
That third group is the point of the exercise. It would be easy to write LFP next to all 17 models and be right most of the time. Being right most of the time is how a spec table stops being worth citing.
The LFP group: 12 models
Sorted by usable capacity as each datasheet publishes it. Where a maker publishes a range, the figure is the top of that range and we mark it "up to".

- sonnen sonnenCore+, LFP, 10 kWh usable on the SCORE-P10, with the SCORE-P20 sold as a separate 20 kWh model rather than as an option on the smaller one. The spec sheet prints the chemistry as lithium iron phosphate and lists both models' usable capacity directly, with up to three units stackable. The NMC group: one model
- Generac PWRcell, NMC, up to 18 kWh usable (9 to 18 kWh per cabinet). Source: Generac PWRcell 2 spec guide, Jul 2025.
Generac is the only model in our set whose datasheet states NMC. That is a genuine difference from the rest of the field rather than a rounding error, and it is worth understanding before it goes on your wall: NMC and LFP trade differently on energy density, thermal behavior, and cobalt content. Chemistry not on the datasheet: four models
These four are the reason this page exists. Each is a mainstream, currently or formerly sold product whose published specification sheet does not tell you which lithium chemistry is inside.
- Tesla Powerwall 3, not specified, 13.5 kWh. Tesla's Powerwall 3 datasheet, which we re-read in August 2026, publishes nominal battery energy, power, efficiency, environmental and compliance tables with no cell chemistry line at all.
- LG Home 8, not specified, 14.4 kWh. LG's official spec page for the RA768K16A11 lists cylindrical lithium-ion cells. Cylindrical is a form factor and lithium-ion is a family, so together they still do not name a chemistry.
- Tesla Powerwall 2, not specified, 13.5 kWh. The Powerwall 2 AC datasheet says lithium-ion, which is the generic family name. Discontinued, and covered in depth in our Powerwall 2 in 2026 guide.
- SolarEdge Home Battery, 400V, not on the datasheet, 9.7 kWh. The SolarEdge Home Battery 400V datasheet, Jan 2026 does not state cell chemistry. SolarEdge does state it elsewhere, and this is the one case in our set worth chasing into a second document. SolarEdge's own Safety Data Sheet for the Home Battery 400V identifies the product as "Lithium-Ion Battery (NMC)" and describes it as 30S1P cells, under product numbers BAT-10K1PS0B-XX. Three caveats travel with that. The document is version 1.6, issued May 2021 and last revised October 2022, while the datasheet above is dated January 2026 and covers a made-in-USA part number carrying a U prefix that the Safety Data Sheet does not list. Its composition section says the substances "may be used" and offers two alternative recipes, the second of which contains both NMC and NCA compounds. So the clean statement is the label on the Safety Data Sheet, not a confirmation of what is in a unit shipping today. We record it here rather than in the NMC group for exactly that reason. For contrast, the 48V unit has its own Safety Data Sheet identifying LFP cells, so SolarEdge does disclose chemistry in that document class for both product lines.
We are not saying these four are secretly one thing or another. We are saying the specification sheet does not carry it, which is a fact about the documentation rather than about the cells. SolarEdge is the useful counterexample: the answer existed on the manufacturer's own site, in a document class most buyers never open. So if chemistry matters to your decision, check the safety data sheet as well as the datasheet, ask the installer to produce a written answer from the manufacturer before you sign, and treat any figure you find on a comparison site with no manufacturer document behind it as unverified.
What the split actually tells you
Two honest readings, and one that people reach for and should not.
The fair reading is that LFP is the stated chemistry for most fixed home storage among the models we track: 12 of 17 say so in print, against one datasheet stating NMC and one safety data sheet stating it. The second fair reading is narrower, that a published chemistry line is itself a small signal about how much a maker documents in public, and since the four datasheet blanks include Tesla's current flagship, and since one of the four turned out to have the answer in another document, it is a weak signal at best.
The reading to avoid is that chemistry ranks the field. It does not. Cycle life, retention floors and throughput caps live in the warranty document, not in the chemistry label, and those vary widely inside the LFP group itself: compare the terms side by side in our warranty guide. If you are shopping rather than researching, start from power and capacity in the full comparison table, then use chemistry as a tiebreaker, then read the actual warranty.
