Tesla Powerwall 2 in 2026: discontinued, still worth buying?

The Powerwall 2 is out of production and part of the fleet was recalled in 2025. What its specs say, how it compares to Powerwall 3, and the used-market risks.

The Tesla Powerwall 2 spent years as the default answer to "which home battery should I get." It is not that anymore. Tesla replaced it with the Powerwall 3, and in November 2025 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published a recall covering part of the installed Powerwall 2 fleet. If you are researching the Powerwall 2 in 2026, you are almost certainly in one of three situations: you already own one, someone offered you leftover or used stock, or you are trying to work out whether the older model is a bargain. The answers differ a lot by situation, so this guide separates them.

Hardware figures below come from Tesla's published datasheets as we record them on our Powerwall 2 model page. The recall and warranty facts come from named sources, dated, and quoted with their limits.

What the Powerwall 2 datasheet actually says

The specs we record from the Tesla Powerwall 2 AC datasheet for North America:

  • 13.5 kWh usable capacity. The same usable figure Tesla publishes for the Powerwall 3.
  • 5 kW continuous output, 7 kW peak. This is the number that dates the product. Five kilowatts is enough for a considered essentials list and light whole-home duty, and thin for a house that wants central air, an electric range, and a well pump running together.
  • 90 percent round-trip efficiency, published on a specific basis: AC to battery to AC at beginning of life, measured at 25C and 3.3 kW charge and discharge power. Hold on to that basis, because it is the trap in the Powerwall 3 comparison below.
  • Lithium-ion chemistry. Tesla names the chemistry family for the Powerwall 2 and does not publish a cell chemistry for the Powerwall 3.
  • Ten-year limited warranty.
  • Scalable to 10 units, and 251.3 lbs per unit, in a 45.3 x 29.6 x 5.75 in enclosure.
  • Integrated inverter, whole-home backup scope. It is an AC-coupled all-in-one, which is why it retrofits cleanly onto existing solar.

For a house that wants a modest essentials backup and daily time-of-use shifting, none of that reads as obsolete. The 5 kW continuous rating is the honest ceiling.

How it compares to the Powerwall 3

We keep a full side by side at Powerwall 3 vs Powerwall 2. The short version, on published figures only:

Same usable capacity. Both are 13.5 kWh usable. A Powerwall 3 does not store more energy than a Powerwall 2.

Very different power. The Powerwall 3 publishes 11.5 kW continuous against the Powerwall 2's 5 kW. That is the substantive upgrade, and it is what makes whole-home backup realistic rather than aspirational. Tesla publishes a 7 kW peak for the Powerwall 2 and does not publish a peak figure for the Powerwall 3, so we do not print one.

Efficiency figures that do not compare. Tesla publishes 89 percent for the Powerwall 3, and that figure is a solar round trip, solar to battery to home. The Powerwall 2's 90 percent is an AC to battery to AC round trip. These measure different paths through the system. Reading the Powerwall 2 as one point more efficient is simply a misreading of two different tests. Our round-trip efficiency explainer covers why the basis matters more than the number.

Different architecture. The Powerwall 3 integrates a solar inverter, which suits a new solar-plus-storage build; the Powerwall 2 is AC-coupled, which suited retrofits onto solar that already had an inverter. Tesla publishes scaling to 10 units for the Powerwall 2, and for the Powerwall 3 up to 4 units for power with up to 3 expansion units per Powerwall. The Powerwall 3 is heavier at 291 lbs against 251.3 lbs.

Same warranty term. Ten years on both, per Tesla's published warranty.

The November 2025 recall

This is the part most buyer guides skip, and it should change how you treat the model.

On November 13, 2025 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published recall number 26-092, "Tesla Recalls Powerwall 2 AC Battery Power Systems Due to Fire and Burn Hazards; Risk of Serious Injury or Death." Per that notice: about 10,500 units; the lithium-ion cells in certain systems can cause the unit to stop functioning during normal use, which can result in overheating and in some cases smoke or flame; Tesla had received 22 reports of overheating, including six reports of smoking and five reports of fire, resulting in minor property damage, with no injuries reported. The remedy is replacement. The notice records the recalled units as sold on Tesla.com and through certified Tesla installers nationwide from November 2020 through December 2022 for about $8,000, which is a historical retail figure from the recall notice and not a price you should expect today.

Tesla's own Powerwall 2 Replacement Program page describes the cause as a third-party battery cell defect, says the issue does not affect the Powerwall 3, states that nearly all affected units in the United States have already been remotely discharged to render them safe, and says every affected unit is removed and replaced at no cost. Affected owners are notified through the Tesla app.

Two practical consequences. If you own a Powerwall 2, keep it online so it can receive that notification, and check the Tesla app rather than assuming. If someone is selling you a used Powerwall 2, the recall status of that serial number is the first question. The CPSC recall page also carries the agency's standard notice that federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a recall.

What "discontinued" means for warranty and service

Discontinued is not the same as abandoned, and in this case the published record is reassuring on the warranty and less reassuring on the used market.

The Tesla Powerwall Limited Warranty (USA) document we read, revision 2.6, effective date May 6, 2026, still lists Powerwall 2 AC part numbers alongside Powerwall 3. Its terms, as published:

  • Free from defects for ten years following the initial installation date.
  • 70 percent energy retention at ten years, expressed as a percentage of the 13.5 kWh rated capacity, with unlimited cycles for solar self-consumption, time-based control, and backup. Any other application, or any mix that includes one not listed, carries a 37.8 MWh aggregate throughput limit measured at the battery AC output.
  • Coverage applies to units purchased from Tesla or a Tesla certified installer in the United States and installed in the United States.
  • Claims can be made by the original end user, and by a subsequent owner who provides proof of ownership. That matters when you sell the house: the warranty follows the equipment.
  • Tesla requires the ability to push remote firmware updates. The document says that if your Powerwall is not connected to the internet for an extended period, or has not been registered, Tesla may not be able to honor the full ten-year warranty, though it will always honor at least four years from first installation, subject to the exclusions and limitations set out in the warranty document.

Take the recall's own sales window as a rough clock. A unit installed between late 2020 and the end of 2022 has roughly four to six years of that ten-year term left as of mid-2026. Registering the unit, keeping it connected, and keeping your original installer's contact details are the three cheapest things you can do to protect coverage.

The used and secondhand market

We do not recommend buying a used Powerwall 2, and the reason is specific rather than squeamish.

Tesla's published warranty excludes defects or capacity shortfalls resulting from removal and reinstallation of the unit at a location other than the original installation location without Tesla's express written consent. A secondhand purchase is, by definition, exactly that. It also excludes modification or repair performed by anyone other than Tesla or a Tesla certified installer, and opening the external casing by anyone other than Tesla. So the plausible upside of a used unit, a lower price on 13.5 kWh, comes paired with the plausible downside that the remaining warranty may not cover the failure you actually get.

Layer the recall on top. Since a subset of the fleet is subject to a replacement program, and the CPSC page carries the federal prohibition on selling recalled products, the burden is on the seller to show that a given serial number is not affected. "The app never said anything" is not that showing if the unit has been offline.

If you still want to explore it, the questions are narrow and non-negotiable: the serial number and its recall status confirmed with Tesla directly, the original installation date, written confirmation from Tesla that reinstalling at your address preserves coverage, and a Tesla certified installer willing to do the work and stand behind it. If any of those four cannot be produced in writing, walk.

Who the Powerwall 2 still makes sense for

You already own one. Nothing here says rip it out. It is a 13.5 kWh battery with a published ten-year warranty that Tesla still lists. Check your recall status in the Tesla app, keep it connected, register it if you have not, and get on with using it.

You are buying a house that came with one. The warranty is claimable by a subsequent owner with proof of ownership, so get the installation date, serial number, and warranty paperwork in the transaction, and verify recall status yourself rather than taking the seller's word.

You found new old stock at an installer. This is the only new-purchase case worth a conversation, and it turns on price and on the installer's willingness to warrant the install. You are buying a 5 kW continuous battery, so it fits essentials backup and daily rate shifting far better than a whole-home ambition.

You want a bargain on the used market. This is the case we would decline, for the reasons above.

One thing applies to all of them. There is no federal tax credit riding on this purchase in 2026. The Section 25D residential clean energy credit expired on December 31, 2025, so a cash buyer this year gets $0 federal, on a Powerwall 2, a Powerwall 3, or anything else. The only surviving federal path is a lease or power purchase agreement where the provider may capture the Section 48E commercial credit and pass some value through in the pricing, covered in the 2026 battery tax credit guide. An installed home battery still commonly runs roughly $10,000 to $20,000 before incentives, and with the credit gone that is the number you are weighing.
