Tesla Powerwall 3 Expansion Units Explained

Tesla Powerwall 3 Expansion units are 13.5 kWh batteries with no inverter in them. That single fact decides what an expansion adds and what it cannot add.

Tesla sells two things that look like a Powerwall 3 and are not the same product. One is a Powerwall 3. The other is a Powerwall 3 Expansion, and the entire difference is that the Expansion has no inverter inside it. Everything people get wrong about expansion packs follows from that one fact, and Tesla's own datasheet states it plainly enough that you do not have to take anyone's word for it. Every figure below comes from the Powerwall 3 datasheet and the Powerwall 3 installation manual, read August 19, 2026. We have not tested any of these products.

What the datasheet says an Expansion unit is

Tesla gives the Expansion its own specifications block, and the block is short. Model number 1807000-xx-y. Nominal battery energy 13.5 kWh. Voltage range 52 to 92 V DC, with a footnote reading that Expansion units are connected in parallel and are not field serviceable. Certifications: UL 1973 and UL 9540.

What is absent tells you more than what is present. The Powerwall 3's own block lists nominal AC output power in four configurations, maximum apparent power, maximum continuous current, output power factor rating, load start capability of 185 LRA, six solar MPPTs and a compliance list running to UL 1741, UL 1741 PCS, IEEE 1547 and a dozen others. The Expansion block contains none of that, because there is nothing in the box that makes AC power or talks to the grid.

The mechanical rows make the same point physically. Tesla lists the Powerwall 3 at 272.5 lb without its cover or bracket, 291.2 lb installed, and 7.6 in deep. It lists the Expansion at 242.5 lb and 6.6 in deep. Thirty pounds and an inch of depth is roughly what the power electronics occupy.

Two more rows on the Expansion are worth reading before anyone quotes you a system. Compatibility with other systems: Only compatible with Powerwall 3. Connection to Powerwall 3 or Expansions: Powerwall 3 Expansion harness, which Tesla footnotes as a listed component of the UL 9540 certification. So the harness is part of the certified system rather than an accessory, which is the sort of detail a permit reviewer may ask about. Capacity scales one way, power scales another

Tesla splits scalability into two separate rows on the Powerwall 3 specification table, and they do not mean the same thing.

Power Scalability: up to four Powerwall 3 units supported.

Energy Scalability: up to three Expansion units, for a maximum total of seven units.

Read together with the datasheet's example system configurations, which end with a diagram captioned "(4) Powerwall 3 Units with (3) Expansion Units (Maximum System Size)," the shape of the product line is clear. Adding Expansions buys you hours. Adding Powerwall 3 units buys you kilowatts, and hours along with them.

That matters because the two constraints bind in different situations. A house that trips its battery when the well pump or the air conditioner starts has a power problem, and three Expansion units will not touch it: the continuous and peak ratings stay exactly where they were. A house that carries its loads fine but runs the battery flat at 2 a.m. has an energy problem, and that is precisely what an Expansion is for. The distinction between those two numbers is the one we cover in kWh vs kW, and it is the first thing to settle before you decide which box to add.

The one power number Expansions do change

There is a single exception, and it is on the same page. Tesla lists maximum continuous charge current and power twice:

  • Powerwall 3 only: 20.8 A AC / 5 kW.
  • Powerwall 3 with up to three Expansion units: 33.3 A AC / 8 kW.

So a stack with Expansions can absorb energy faster than a lone Powerwall 3 can. That is a charging figure, not a discharge figure, and it is relevant in two situations: a large solar array trying to fill a big battery inside a short midday window, and a system permitted to charge from the grid during a cheap overnight period. It does not change the 5.8, 7.6, 10 or 11.5 kW nominal output configurations, and it does not change the 185 LRA load start capability.

A detail that decides where the boxes go

Tesla's installation manual page for Powerwall 3 specifications, last modified April 3, 2026, carries the same Energy Scalability row and adds a note the datasheet does not: the Expansion units must be connected to the Leader Powerwall 3, and they will not function if connected to a Follower.

In a multi-Powerwall system, one unit is the Leader. Expansions hang off that one. That constrains the physical layout, because the datasheet's stacking row reads "Up to (3) Expansion units behind a Powerwall 3," floor mount only, and the harness that joins them has length limits set out in the installation manual. Wall mounting is also supported for Expansions, at a listed installed weight of 261.2 lb including cover and bracket.

None of this is a reason to avoid Expansions. It is a reason to have the layout drawn before the units arrive, rather than after.

The number on Tesla's marketing page and the number on the datasheet

There is a discrepancy worth knowing about, because it changes what you think the ceiling is.

Tesla's consumer support page "How Powerwall Works," read August 19, 2026, describes the Powerwall 3's scalability as "System expansion available anytime" with "40.5 kWh max addition per unit." Elsewhere on the same page: "Powerwall 3 Expansion is designed for Powerwall 3 owners looking to extend backup duration at a reduced cost. Each Powerwall 3 Expansion unit provides 13.5 kWh of additional energy capacity."

40.5 kWh is exactly three Expansion units. The phrasing "per unit" reads as three Expansions per Powerwall 3, which on a four-Powerwall system would imply twelve. The datasheet and the installation manual both say something narrower: up to three Expansion units, maximum total of seven units, with the maximum system diagram showing four Powerwall 3 units and three Expansions.

Where a marketing page and a datasheet disagree, we go with the datasheet, and so does the permit. Seven units at 13.5 kWh nominal is 94.5 kWh, which is the largest Powerwall 3 system Tesla documents. If an installer quotes you more than that, ask which Tesla document the design is drawn from.

Where the fire code catches up with a large stack

Aggregate stored energy is a code question before it is a product question, and a maxed-out Powerwall 3 system runs into it.

NFPA's own summary of the residential chapter of NFPA 855 lists a maximum stored energy of 80 kWh for exterior walls, garages, detached structures and outdoor installations, and 40 kWh for utility closets and storage or utility spaces, alongside a per-unit limit of 20 kWh above which a unit is treated as a commercial installation. Each Powerwall 3 and each Expansion sits at 13.5 kWh nominal, comfortably under the per-unit limit. Seven of them together do not sit under the 80 kWh aggregate figure.

That NFPA summary is dated October 2021 against a current 2026 edition, and adoption varies by jurisdiction, so treat it as the shape of the rule rather than the rule itself. The practical move is to ask your building department what aggregate limit it enforces before you design a six or seven unit system, not after the equipment is on site. What the Expansion is covered by

The Tesla Powerwall Limited Warranty (USA), Rev 2.6, effective May 6, 2026, lists Powerwall 3 Expansion part number 1807000-xx-x among its covered products, alongside the Powerwall 2 AC, Powerwall+, Powerwall 3, the gateways and the Backup Switch. The same terms apply: ten years free from defects, 13.5 kWh energy capacity on the initial installation date, and 70 percent energy retention at ten years, expressed as a percentage of the 13.5 kWh rated capacity. For solar self-consumption, time-based control and backup, the warranty states unlimited cycles. For any other application, or any combination that includes one not listed, it states a 37.8 MWh aggregate throughput limit measured at the battery AC output.

The same document also states that Tesla requires the ability to update the unit through remote firmware upgrades, and that if the Powerwall is not connected to the internet for an extended period Tesla may not be able to honor the full ten year term, though it will honor at least four years.

What to ask before adding one

Three questions, in this order.

Is your problem hours or kilowatts? If the battery is tripping under load rather than running out overnight, an Expansion is the wrong purchase. Size it against your actual loads first, which is what our sizing guide is for.

Which unit is the Leader, and where is it? Expansions must hang off the Leader Powerwall 3, and the harness has length limits. If the Leader is on the far side of the house from the only wall with room, that is a layout problem to solve on paper.

What aggregate energy limit does your jurisdiction enforce? This is the constraint that stops large stacks, and it belongs in the conversation before the design is final.
