Outdoor home battery installs: IP and NEMA ratings by model
Outdoor-rated home batteries: enclosure ratings and outdoor stance for all 17 models we track, from each datasheet. One publishes IP30 and calls itself indoor.
"Outdoor rated" is printed on almost every home battery brochure and it covers at least five different levels of protection. NEMA 3R, NEMA 4, NEMA 4X, IP55, IP65 and IP67 all appear across the 17 models on our comparison pages, they do not mean the same thing, and NEMA's own documentation says two of those systems cannot be converted into each other in the direction buyers usually want.
This page is the model-by-model reference: what each maker publishes as an enclosure rating, and what each maker publishes about outdoor installation, quoted from the current datasheet. Where a maker publishes no outdoor statement we record that rather than assuming one. Where the box goes in code terms is a separate question covered in where to install a home battery, and what the ambient temperature has to be is covered in the temperature range guide. We have not tested any of these products.

What the NEMA types in that table actually claim
NEMA publishes free definitions for its enclosure types, drawn from NEMA Standards Publication 250. The three that appear on home batteries, quoted:
- Type 3R. "Enclosures constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts; to provide a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (falling dirt); to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water (rain, sleet, snow); and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure."
- Type 4. The same, plus windblown dust in the solid objects list and "splashing water, and hose directed water" in the water list.
- Type 4X. The Type 4 protections plus "an additional level of protection against corrosion".

The practical gap between 3R and 4 is windblown dust and hose directed water. A NEMA 3R unit is rated for weather falling on it. It is not rated for a pressure washer aimed at it or for a dusty windy site, which is worth knowing before someone cleans the driveway. The step from 4 to 4X is corrosion, which is why Savant, Panasonic and Qcells publishing 4X reads differently within a few miles of salt water than it does inland.
Why an IP number and a NEMA number are not interchangeable
Four products in our set publish an IP code and no NEMA type: EG4 at IP65, Fortress Power and BYD at IP55, and sonnen at IP30. Five publish both, and the two Tesla units are the most granular in the group, splitting the ingress rating between the battery and the wiring compartment.
IP codes come from IEC 60529. As NEMA's own comparison text puts it, "The IEC designation consists of the letters IP followed by two numerals. The first characteristic numeral indicates the degree of protection provided by the enclosure with respect to persons and solid foreign objects entering the enclosure. The second characteristic numeral indicates the degree of protection provided by the enclosure with respect to the harmful ingress of water."
The part buyers should take from that same document is the conversion warning. NEMA publishes a table converting its type numbers into IEC classifications, and prints across the top of it: "(Cannot be Used to Convert IEC Classification Designations to NEMA Type Ratings)". The body text gives the reason: "The enclosure type numbers meet or exceed the test requirements for the associated IEC Classification; for this reason Table A-1 cannot be used to convert from IEC Classifications to enclosure Type numbers." Elsewhere the same document explains why, noting that IEC 60529 "does not specify degrees of protection against mechanical damage of equipment, risk of explosions, or conditions such as moisture (produced for example by condensation), corrosive vapors, fungus, or vermin", while the NEMA standard "does test for environmental conditions such as corrosion, rust, icing, oil, and coolants".
So the conversion runs one way only. A NEMA 3R enclosure can be said to meet certain IP levels. An IP55 enclosure cannot be said to be equivalent to a NEMA type, because the tests NEMA adds were never run on it. Any comparison table that lines up IP and NEMA numbers as equals is doing something NEMA explicitly says its own table cannot do.
The one product in our set with no outdoor rating
sonnen is the exception and the datasheet is not hiding it. The sonnenCore+ technical specifications publish "Enclosure rating: IP30", and the document's opening sentence describes the product as "a stackable indoor solution that offers up to 60 kWh of battery capacity".
Read the code against the IEC definition above and the second character is the water digit. A zero there is not a low level of water protection, it is none claimed. That is a coherent design choice for a product intended to live in a garage or a utility room, and it is a hard constraint if the only wall you have is outside.
The rating covers one box, and the weakest box governs
A home battery system is rarely one enclosure, and on four of these products the ratings are not uniform across the boxes.
- Panasonic: NEMA 4X on the battery and on the inverter, NEMA 3R on the SmartBox.
- Qcells: NEMA 4X on the Q.SAVE battery and the Q.VOLT inverter, NEMA 3R on the Q.HOME HUB.
- Anker: NEMA 4 on the SOLIX X1, NEMA 3R on the Backup Controller 200-H.
- Tesla: NEMA 3R on the Powerwall 3, on Gateway 3, on Backup Gateway 2 and on the Backup Switch, which is one of the few consistent sets in the group.
- Generac removes the question entirely by publishing "NEMA 3R (all enclosures)".
Where the ratings differ, the lowest one is the system's real exposure limit, because the controller has to go somewhere too and it is usually near the battery. The same principle applies to the temperature tables, where Panasonic's SmartBox is again the narrowest component, and that analysis is in the temperature range guide. An outdoor rating is not a temperature permission, and neither is code approval
Two closing cautions, because an enclosure rating settles less than it looks like it settles.
Temperature is a separate specification and it rules out more locations than water does. SolarEdge footnotes that "Installation in direct sunlight is allowed only when the ambient temperature is within the Ambient Operating Temperature Range". Enphase instructs installers to avoid direct sunlight so the unit stays within its optimal operating range. Several makers publish derating thresholds well inside their headline ceilings. A NEMA 4X cabinet on a south-facing wall in Phoenix is still a NEMA 4X cabinet, and it may still be outside its rated performance band on an August afternoon.
Code decides where the box may go, and the datasheet only decides what the box can take. Permitted locations, separation from doors and windows, gypsum board on unfinished walls, vehicle impact protection and aggregate energy limits are set by the fire code your jurisdiction adopted, not by the enclosure rating.
